SCHOOL HEALTH PROGRAMME
Government U.P School, Adichanalloor, Kollam Introduction As part of our community health nursing programme, we conducted a school health programme at Government U.P School, Adichanalloor, Kollam. The programme aimed to create awareness among school students regarding personal hygiene, food and water safety, and prevention of communicable diseases, especially shigellosis. It also focused on assessing the health status of the students. Objectives Report As we reached the school by 10:00 am, we were warmly welcomed by the staff and students. As part of our community health nursing programme, we conducted a school health programme at Government U.P School, Adichanalloor, Kollam. The programme aimed to create awareness among school students regarding personal hygiene, food and water safety, and prevention of communicable diseases, especially shigellosis. The programme started with a flash mob performed by our team to attract the attention of students and teachers. It created enthusiasm and active participation among students. A health education skit was conducted focusing on the prevention of shigella infection. Health education skit was conducted focusing on the prevention of shigella infection. The skit highlighted: Importance of hand washing before meals and after toilet use Drinking boiled and clean water Eating hygienic food Proper disposal of waste Avoiding open defecation The students understood the message well and actively responded Basic health assessment was conducted for the students to identify their general health status. The assessment included: Height and weight measurement General physical examination Personal hygiene assessment Identification of any signs of illness or malnutrition This helped in early identification of minor health issues and provided health guidance. An health exhibition was arranged displaying charts, posters,models related to shigella prevention ,food and water hygiene. The exhibition helped students gain better understanding about prevention of shigella. Conclusion The programme was successful in improving awareness among students regarding hygiene and disease prevention. Students actively participated in all activities and showed interest in learning healthy habits. Teachers appreciated the effort and educational value of the programme. The school health programme at Government U.P School, Adichanalloor, Kollam was a valuable experience. It helped us understand the importance of health education in schools and the role of nurses in promoting child health. The programme was effective in spreading awareness and promoting healthy practices among school children. We express our sincere gratitude to Dr. Sr. Getrude, HOD of Community Health Department, for her valuable guidance, encouragement, and support in conducting this school health programme successfully. We also extend our heartfelt thanks to Mrs. Neenu, Lecturer, Mrs. Akhila, Assistant Professor, and Mrs. Vincy, Nursing Tutor, for their constant supervision, motivation, and assistance throughout the programme. Their guidance and support helped us to organize and implement the activities effectively.
